Kelps represent the largest species of algae in the world, with some, like the giant kelp, exceeding 100 feet (30 meters) in length. Giant kelp is also one of the fastest-growing organisms in the ocean, growing up to 2 ft per day! Gas-filled bladders beneath the kelp’s blades, called pneumatocysts, float the kelp towards the water’s surface, while the holdfasts keep them anchored in place, creating the iconic forest-like appearance.
